No fewer than seven thousand members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State have allegedly defected to Rabiu Kwankwaso’s New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

According to reports, the defection took place in an event at Liberty Stadium, Ibadan, Oyo state capital, on Friday, August 26, 2022.

The Oyo governorship candidate of the NNPP, Engr. Popoola Olukayode Joshua was said to have received the new members across the 33 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the State.

According to the Oyo NNPP governorship candidate, Nigerians are frustrated with the two major political parties.

Joshua also the NNPP was ready to obtain power from the Governor Seyi Makinde’s PDP-led administration.

The defection is coming barely 24 hours after Joshua was unveiled as the party’s governorship candidate in the state.

It was gathered that the Ogun State governorship candidate of the NNPP, Olufemi Ajadi, joined other political stalwarts to storm the official unveiling of the NNPP Oyo State gubernatorial candidate, Engr. Joshua and his running mate, Alhaja Adesope Madinat Atinuke.

Meanwhile, Former Kano Governor Senator Ibrahim Shekarau has officially dumped the NNPP barely three months after decamping from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Senator representing Kano Central District, on Monday, August 22, 2022, disclosed this to a crowd of supporters at the Kano Foundation office along Bayero University Kano (BUK) road.

Shekarau said; “I am done with NNPP.”

Speaking of the reason for dumping the party, he said the NNPP’s founder, former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso betrayed and humiliated him.

His words “I will never be a party to injustice. My integrity is of utmost and not any political position that will make me compromise it and that of my people. Nobody will use position or money against my integrity.”

According to him, “All the agreements we had with him were betrayed by Kwankwaso and his boys and they did not accommodate one single person from my camp.”

He said, “We reached an agreement to accommodate my supporters into various elective positions in the party, but until now, the committee set up could not accommodate one single person apart from the Senatorial slot given to me.”

Senator Shekarau said,” I am a man of honour and integrity but his Governorship candidate (Abba Kabir Yusuf) who was given the responsibility to look at areas to accommodate my people into various elective positions never for one single day do so or even call for meeting talk less of accepting my supporters to contest”.

He added that “Nobody will use the money to change my conscience. I was a governor for eight years in Kano and people believed in my integrity. I am still living in a rented house in Abuja and never allocated a single plot of land to myself when I served as Governor in Kano and I challenged anyone who knows my plot of land to expose it.

He appealed to his teeming supporters to exercise patience and await his final decision on whether to remain in the NNPP or quit for another party.

Though Shekarau did not mention the party he intends to move to, some sources said he is set to rejoin the APC.
