Former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi has categorically rejected speculation linking him to any vice-presidential slot in the 2027 elections, emphasizing that he is contesting for the presidency and not as a running mate.
The clarification comes after Dele Momodu, a close associate of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, suggested that Amaechi could be considered as Atiku’s running mate if Peter Obi declines a joint ticket.
Addressing the rumors, Amaechi insisted that he has no intention of assuming a secondary role on any presidential ticket, noting that his ambition is exclusively focused on Nigeria’s highest office.
He described the speculation as misleading and unnecessary, particularly at a time when political alliances and negotiations ahead of 2027 are under close public scrutiny.
Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor and two-time Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign, remains one of the most influential figures expected to play a major role in the upcoming election cycle.
Speaking to Sunday PUNCH, Momodu said, “Many people are underestimating Amaechi. He single-handedly mobilized support for Buhari. What Nyesom Wike is doing now, though in a disorderly manner, Amaechi managed exceptionally well as Rivers State governor. Amaechi’s mobilisation for Buhari surpassed even Tinubu. If Obi decides to go solo or doesn’t make up his mind, I believe the mantle could fall on Rotimi Amaechi.”
David Iyofor, Amaechi’s aide, reiterated that his principal’s goal is solely to become President and that he has no interest in being a vice-presidential candidate.
“Amaechi is not seeking to be anyone’s running mate and has no plans to accept such a role,” Iyofor said.
“He firmly believes it is Southern Nigeria’s turn to produce the next president, and he is therefore pursuing the presidential ticket under the ADC.”
Iyofor added:
“Rotimi Amaechi is not part of any discussions about being a running mate. For emphasis, he is running to be President of Nigeria, not anyone’s deputy. Politicians should refrain from mentioning Amaechi in any vice-presidential talks.”
Amaechi, who contested the APC presidential ticket in 2023, defected to the ADC earlier this year and has officially declared his intention to seek the party’s nomination for the 2027 election.
He will be competing against Atiku Abubakar and other aspirants for the ADC’s 2027 presidential ticket.
