2027: Ali Modu Sheriff Claims Peter Obi Planning to Return to PDP for Presidential Ticket

Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, a former governor of Borno State and ex-national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has claimed that Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), is preparing to return to the PDP.

Sheriff made this statement on Monday during an interview on Politics Today, a programme aired on Channels Television.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, resigned from the PDP on May 25, 2022, just days before the party’s presidential primary. At the time, he cited “recent developments” within the party as reasons that hindered his ability to contribute meaningfully.

Initially set to contest the PDP’s primary on May 28, 2022, Obi left the party and joined the Labour Party on May 27. He subsequently emerged as the LP’s presidential flag bearer in the 2023 general elections.

Currently, Obi is involved in a coalition of opposition figures seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. The group has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the next election. However, the presidential ambitions of other prominent figures in the coalition—such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi—have fueled speculation that Obi may withdraw from the alliance.

During the interview, Sheriff dismissed the ADC as politically insignificant, predicting its quick decline.

In politics, ADC doesn’t count. Give it three months, and it will fizzle out,” he said.

He further asserted, “From the information available to me, Peter Obi will return to the PDP any moment from now. He’s only waiting for the right time. He will run again for president under the PDP.”
