Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has refuted claims that he intends to step aside for a younger candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku, who previously ran for president under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election, has expressed interest in contesting again in 2027. He recently left the PDP and, alongside other opposition figures like former Governors Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi, adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Paul Ibe, Atiku clarified misrepresentations from a BBC Hausa Service interview. “After reviewing the video and transcripts of the interview in both Hausa and English, it is clear that His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, never stated, suggested, or implied that he would step down for anyone,” Ibe said.
Atiku emphasized that young aspirants and others are welcome to compete in the primaries, adding that he would support a young candidate who emerges through a fair and competitive process without hesitation.
