24-YEAR-OLD NIGERIAN GETS LIFE SENTENCE FOR BRUTAL STREET MURDER OF WOMAN IN UK

A 24-year-old Nigerian, Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the United Kingdom for the brutal and random killing of a 56-year-old woman, Nila Patel.

He was handed a minimum term of 21 years and six months after being found guilty of murder at Leicester Crown Court, following an attack that shocked residents of Leicester.

The court heard that the incident happened on June 24, 2025, shortly after Ahanonu crashed his car while driving under the influence of cannabis. Witnesses said he had been driving dangerously through the city centre—swerving across lanes, running traffic lights, and narrowly avoiding pedestrians—before losing control and crashing near a bus stop.

Moments after the crash, he reportedly fled the scene and launched an unprovoked attack on Patel, who had just stepped off a bus and was on her way home. In broad daylight, he repeatedly punched, kicked, and stamped on her.

She suffered severe injuries, including a fractured skull and major brain trauma, and died two days later in hospital despite efforts to save her.

Security staff from Leicester Royal Infirmary were among the first to respond and managed to restrain Ahanonu until police arrived.

Investigations later revealed that he had been smoking cannabis before the incident. Officers also found large quantities of the drug in his car, along with multiple mobile phones.

During the trial, Ahanonu admitted to dangerous driving, possession of cannabis with intent to supply, and assaulting an emergency worker after biting a police officer. However, he denied the murder charge, claiming he could not remember the attack—an argument the jury rejected.

A senior investigating officer described the killing as one of the most violent and senseless attacks carried out by a stranger, noting that the victim was simply on her way home.

CCTV footage played a key role in the case, capturing both his reckless driving and the fatal assault. Members of the public who stepped in to help restrain him were also commended.

The court also heard that Ahanonu had travelled from London to Leicester earlier that day.

He has now been remanded in prison to begin serving his sentence.

Patel’s family described her as a kind and vibrant woman, paying tribute to her as someone who brought warmth and joy to those around her.
