Twenty-five members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Osun State House of Assembly have defected to the Accord Party. The lawmakers made the announcement on Friday, following the lead of Ademola Adeleke, who left the PDP in December 2025 and has been cleared by the Independent National Electoral Commission to contest the August 15, 2026 Osun governorship election under Accord.
According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Olamide Tiamiyu, the lawmakers made their decision during a parliamentary meeting before formally declaring their defection at a meeting with the governor and top Accord Party leaders.
“They reaffirmed their unwavering support for the Governor, His Excellency Sen. Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, and their commitment to quality representation, transparency and responsive leadership,” the statement read. The lawmakers urged supporters to join them in this new political chapter, describing the move as a step to ensure continuity in governance and accelerate development for Osun State.
Tiamiyu explained that the lawmakers had resigned from the PDP weeks earlier and, after “deep reflection and extensive consultations with supporters, political associates and key stakeholders,” resolved to align with Accord. He added that Accord provides a “more stable, inclusive and people-centred platform” to continue serving the state.
With the defection of the 25 PDP lawmakers, including the Speaker Adewale Egbedun, the 26-member Osun Assembly now has only Femi Popoola of the All Progressives Congress as the sole opposition lawmaker.
