Forty-four members of the House of Representatives have jointly appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to authorize the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The lawmakers, operating under the banner of Concerned Federal Lawmakers, sent a formal letter to the President requesting that he instruct the Attorney-General of the Federation to exercise his constitutional powers by discontinuing Kanu’s ongoing prosecution.

In the letter signed by Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere and 43 others, the lawmakers argued that ending the legal action would open the door for meaningful dialogue aimed at resolving long-standing political and security tensions in the Southeast.

They urged the President to consider a political solution, stressing that national peace and unity could be strengthened through constructive engagement rather than prolonged judicial processes.

The appeal was endorsed by lawmakers from various states, including Hon. Harrison Nwadike, Hon. Obi Aguocha, Hon. Peter Akpanke, Hon. Chike John Okafor, Hon. Adam Ogene Ogbaru, and others who believe Kanu’s release would help de-escalate unrest and foster reconciliation.
