Nigeria and Sierra Leone First Ladies Elected to Key Positions in OAFLAD at AU Summit
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – February 15, 2025
At the 29th Ordinary General Assembly of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), held during the 38th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, significant leadership appointments were made, marking a milestone for Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, First Lady of Sierra Leone, was elected as the new President of OAFLAD. In her new role, Dr. Bio is poised to lead the organization’s efforts in advocating for women’s and youth’s health and empowerment across the continent. Her election reflects Sierra Leone’s growing influence in regional initiatives and underscores the country’s commitment to addressing critical developmental challenges.
Simultaneously, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was elected as a member of OAFLAD’s Steering Committee, the organization’s highest decision-making body. Representing West Africa alongside her counterparts from Sierra Leone and Angola, Mrs. Tinubu’s appointment signifies Nigeria’s active engagement in continental strategies aimed at improving health outcomes and empowering women and youth.
OAFLAD, established in 2002, is a coalition of African First Ladies dedicated to advocating for policies that enhance health services accessibility and promote women’s and youth empowerment. Under the newly elected leadership, OAFLAD will prioritize four strategic pillars: health, education, gender-based violence, and women’s economic empowerment, as outlined in its Strategic Framework 2025-2030.
These leadership appointments are poised to strengthen collaborative efforts among African nations, fostering sustainable development and social change. For Nigeria and Sierra Leone, the elections of their First Ladies to these pivotal roles not only elevate their national profiles but also reaffirm their dedication to championing the rights and well-being of women and youth across Africa.
