#Chief Edwin Clark Passes On at 97: A Life of Service, Legacy, and Unwavering Advocacy

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Senator Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, OFR, CON, a venerable elder statesman and leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF). Chief Clark departed this life peacefully on Monday, February 17, 2025, at the age of 97, surrounded by family and loved ones in Abuja.

Born on May 25, 1927, in Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, Chief Clark’s life was a testament to unwavering dedication to public service, education, and the advocacy of justice and equity for the Niger Delta region. His illustrious career spanned over seven decades, during which he held numerous significant positions, including:

Federal Commissioner for Information: Serving under General Yakubu Gowon, Chief Clark played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s information dissemination during a critical period.

Commissioner for Education and Finance: In the old Bendel State, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Midwest Institute of Technology, which later evolved into the University of Benin.

Founder of Edwin Clark University: Demonstrating his commitment to education, he established this institution in his hometown, Kiagbodo, to foster learning and development.


As a prominent Ijaw leader and the convener of PANDEF, Chief Clark was a steadfast advocate for the rights and development of the Niger Delta. His leadership was marked by a relentless pursuit of peace, equity, and progress for his people.

In mourning his departure, we celebrate Chief Clark’s remarkable life and enduring legacy. His contributions have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s socio-political landscape and the advancement of the Niger Delta region.
