The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has stressed the need for urgent improvements at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) due to its ageing infrastructure.
During his maiden inspection tour of MMIA, accompanied by FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, Ganduje acknowledged that many airport facilities and equipment have become obsolete.
He assured stakeholders that the board would collaborate with FAAN management to upgrade infrastructure to meet global standards.
“There are pressing issues, but discussions have already begun on how to resolve them. Airports in developed countries are a product of continuous improvement, visionary management, and investment in modern technology, which is what we aim to achieve here,” he said.
Ganduje pointed out that several projects awarded in previous years remain abandoned due to inflation and rising costs.
He noted that some of the original airport equipment is now outdated, but FAAN has devised strategies to address these issues.
FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Kuku, highlighted the ongoing nationwide rehabilitation of airport facilities, stating that these efforts are yielding positive results.
“We have introduced several explosive detection devices to enhance security across the country’s airports.
“Also, terminal rehabilitation projects are progressing, and we expect to complete and commission several of them in the coming months,” she said.
