A newborn baby died in Paris on Monday after being thrown out of a hotel window by his 18-year-old American mother, with the umbilical cord still attached.
According to French prosecutors, the tragic incident occurred in a hotel in the 20th arrondissement of eastern Paris. The infant was discovered wrapped in a cloth outside the hotel and was rushed to Robert Debré Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:45 a.m.
Investigations revealed that the young woman, an American student on a study trip with other U.S. students, had given birth in her hotel room before throwing the newborn from the second-floor window.
French authorities have launched a murder investigation, and the mother has been taken into custody. Officials are also considering the possibility of “pregnancy denial,” a psychological condition in which a woman is unaware of or unable to accept her pregnancy.
The woman has been hospitalized for post-delivery treatment as investigations continue.
