The Lagos State Police Command has restored the security details of Hon. Mojisola Meranda, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, confirmed this during a press briefing on Thursday evening, clarifying that the withdrawal of security personnel earlier in the day was part of a routine audit of police officers and firearms.
Security Withdrawal Sparks Controversy
Earlier on Thursday morning, security escorts attached to the Speaker’s office and residence were suddenly withdrawn, fueling speculation and political tension. This came after security details of impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa were restored, allowing him to storm the Assembly complex and declare himself Speaker. Obasa even presided over a plenary session attended by a few lawmakers.
Police Explain Security Review
Addressing concerns, Commissioner Jimoh reassured the public that the security withdrawal was not politically motivated but part of a statewide and nationwide personnel audit.
“The withdrawal of security attached to the Speaker and other VIPs in Lagos was due to an ongoing audit of police personnel and firearms, which is also being carried out in other state police commands,” he stated.
With security details now restored, the political atmosphere surrounding the Lagos State House of Assembly remains tense as events continue to unfold.
