#Obasa Declares Himself Lagos Speaker as Supporters Sing Tinubu’s Anthem(VIDEO)

The Lagos State House of Assembly was thrown into further turmoil on Thursday, February 27, as Mudashiru Obasa stormed the legislative complex and declared himself Speaker, despite his impeachment in January.

Supporters gathered at the entrance of the Assembly, singing “On Your Mandate We Shall Stand”, a popular chant associated with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, signaling strong political backing for Obasa.

Obasa Insists He Was Never Removed

Speaking to reporters, Obasa maintained that his impeachment was illegal, stating:

“I have never been removed. Impeachment or removal is democratic and constitutional, but due process must be followed. I am not against it, but it must be done properly.”

His return comes hours after police withdrew security details from Speaker Mojisola Meranda and restored Obasa’s security aides, fueling speculation about high-level interference.

Background of the Crisis

  • January 2025: Obasa was impeached while abroad and replaced by Mojisola Meranda, his former deputy.
  • Upon returning, Obasa rejected his removal, claiming it was unconstitutional.
  • 36 lawmakers loyal to Meranda insisted that her position as Speaker was final.
  • Obasa filed a lawsuit, but the courts have yet to rule on the matter.

Political Implications

The chants by supporters, often used to pledge allegiance to President Tinubu, have fueled speculation that Obasa enjoys presidential backing against Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the pro-Meranda lawmakers.

With both factions refusing to back down, the leadership crisis in the 40-member House of Assembly remains unresolved, leaving Lagos politics on edge.
