#Obasa Reinstated as Lagos Speaker as Meranda Steps Down

Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa has reclaimed his position as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, just two months after being impeached. His successor, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, who briefly held the role, has resigned and returned to her previous position as Deputy Speaker.

Obasa was removed from office on January 13, 2025, over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of power. However, he contested his impeachment in court and later arrived at the state assembly complex with security personnel, asserting himself as the legitimate Speaker.

Amid tensions in the House, the Lagos State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Cornelius Ojelabi, convened a meeting on Monday with both Obasa and Meranda to resolve the leadership crisis. Following the meeting, Meranda announced her resignation as Speaker during a plenary session, emphasizing that her decision was aimed at preserving the integrity of the assembly.

“It is with every sense of responsibility that I hereby give you notice of my decision to resign as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, effective today, March 3, 2025,” Meranda stated.

She acknowledged the historical significance of her tenure as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly but emphasized the need to prevent further conflicts. Lawmakers praised her leadership, commending her as a “hero of democracy” for her 49 days in office.

With Meranda stepping down, Obasa has officially resumed his role as Speaker, marking a dramatic reversal in the assembly’s leadership saga.
