VIDEO: Governor Fubara of Rivers State Talks Tough Today.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has taken a firm stance amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the state’s House of Assembly. In a recent address, Governor Fubara declared that the faction led by Martin Amaewhule “doesn’t exist” in the eyes of the law, emphasizing his non-recognition of their legitimacy.

This declaration follows a series of events that have intensified the political crisis in Rivers State. In December 2023, Governor Fubara presented an ₦800 billion budget to a group of five lawmakers, a move that was later nullified by the Federal High Court in Abuja. The court ordered the governor to re-present the budget to the legally constituted House under Amaewhule’s leadership. The Court of Appeal upheld this decision, criticizing Governor Fubara’s actions as “a joke taken too far” and highlighting the necessity of adhering to constitutional processes.

Despite possessing the instruments of state power, Governor Fubara has expressed his commitment to maintaining peace and political stability in Rivers State. He emphasized his restraint in the face of intimidation and unwarranted attacks, underscoring his belief that “peace is the best relationship to cultivate.”

The governor’s firm position reflects the escalating tensions within the state’s political landscape, underscoring the critical need for dialogue and adherence to constitutional protocols to resolve the ongoing impasse.
