#Alaafin-Designate Abimbola Owoade Begins Traditional Rites, Imposes 21-Day Curfew

Abimbola Owoade, the newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, has commenced the 21-day traditional rites known as “Oro Ipebi”, a significant cultural practice marking his ascension to the revered throne.

Oro Ipebi, a mandatory rite for the Alaafin, symbolizes the deep spiritual connection between the new ruler, his ancestors, and the divine responsibilities of the throne.

The customary rites began on Friday, March 7, 2025, and will conclude on Saturday, March 29, 2025. In line with tradition, a daily curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. has been imposed across Oyo town for the duration of the rites.

Curfew Announcement

The Chief of Staff to the monarch, Mr. Rotimi Osuntola, officially announced the curfew in a statement released in Ibadan, stating:

“The Alaafin of Oyo Kingdom hereby announces the commencement of Òrò Ìpẹbí, the mandatory rites for His Imperial Majesty before his ascension to the throne.

The rites will last from Friday, March 7, to Saturday, March 29, 2025. During this period, a curfew will be enforced across Oyo township from 8 PM to 6 AM daily. Any individual who violates this order will be arrested and detained until 7 AM the following day.”

The statement further emphasized the sacred nature of the rites:

“It is important to note that Òrò Ìpẹbí requires the incoming Alaafin to undergo absolute seclusion throughout its duration. This tradition is sacrosanct and must be respected by all.”

Coronation Set for April 5, 2025

Following the successful completion of the traditional rites, Oba Owoade’s coronation is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 5, 2025, in Oyo town.

Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier presented the staff and certificate of office to Prince Akeem Abimbola Owoade, formally recognizing him as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. The event, held at the Government House in Ibadan, marked the beginning of a new chapter in the Oyo Kingdom’s history.

In his address, Governor Makinde highlighted the Alaafin’s role as a symbol of unity and cultural heritage, expressing confidence in Oba Owoade’s leadership:

“I believe the new Alaafin will lead with wisdom, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and development of the Oyo Kingdom.”

A New Era for Oyo Kingdom

Oba Owoade succeeds Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, who ruled for 51 years before his passing on April 22, 2022. His reign was marked by remarkable influence and longevity, cementing his legacy in Oyo history.

The selection of Prince Owoade as the new Alaafin was confirmed by the Oyomesi, the traditional council of kingmakers, and later ratified by Governor Makinde after extensive consultations and traditional divinations.

With the conclusion of the Òrò Ìpẹbí rites and his upcoming coronation, Oba Owoade is set to officially assume the throne, ushering in a new era for the Oyo Kingdom.
