At least four people have lost their lives, and nine others sustained severe injuries after a passenger bus crashed along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the accident in a statement issued from Abeokuta. According to reports, the incident occurred on Sunday night in the Alapako area of the highway.
Odutola stated that the crash was caused by a punctured tyre, which led a Toyota Hiace bus (registration number FKJ 570 YE) to lose control and somersault off the road. The impact killed four people on the spot, including the driver, while nine others suffered varying degrees of injuries.
“The tragic lone accident occurred on March 9, 2025, at about 8:35 PM in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area. An eyewitness reported that the left rear tyre of the bus was punctured by a bad portion of the road while in motion, causing the driver to lose control and the vehicle to overturn,” Odutola stated.
Emergency responders immediately transported the injured victims to Victory Hospital in Ogere for medical attention, while the deceased were taken to the FOS Morgue in Ipara. The wreckage of the bus has been removed for further inspection by the Vehicle Inspection Office.
Odutola urged motorists to ensure regular vehicle maintenance and adhere to road safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
This accident comes just 48 hours after another fatal crash on the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway, where 16 people were burnt to death. In a separate incident, three lives were lost, and 14 others were injured in a multi-vehicle collision along the same Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) Commandant General, Seni Ogunyemi, confirmed that the latter accident involved six vehicles and 23 passengers. One of the vehicles reportedly tipped over while making a turn, spilling its contents onto the road and causing a chain reaction.
Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of cautious driving and improved road conditions to prevent further loss of lives.
