*Read/Recite the Qur’an … start today if not earlier*

Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari (May Allah be pleased with him):

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, ” *The believer who recites the Qur’an is like a citron whose fragrance is sweet and whose taste is delicious. A believer who does not recite the Qur’an is like a date-fruit which has no fragrance but has a sweet taste. The hypocrite who recites the Qur’an is like basil whose fragrance is so sweet, but its taste is bitter. The hypocrite who does not recite the Qur’an is like a colocynth which has no fragrance and its taste is bitter.”*

Al-Bukhari and Muslim

*NOTES 📝*

1. The profound impact of Allah’s words manifests differently in individuals, with some deeply influenced and others unaffected. The believer who engages with the Qur’an extensively embodies the greatest share of this influence, while the true hypocrite remains untouched. Some are swayed more by external appearances than internal transformation, embodying hypocrisy. Conversely, believers who neglect reading the Qur’an also experience a divide between their outward and inward states.

2. Shaykh Ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen comented on this hadith that it categorizes people based on their relationship with the Qur’an. The Prophet ﷺ likened a believer who recites the Qur’an to a citrus fruit, which has both a pleasant fragrance and a sweet taste, symbolizing the believer’s purity and the benefit they bring to others. A believer who does not recite the Qur’an is compared to a date—sweet in taste but without fragrance—indicating goodness within but limited external impact. A hypocrite who recites the Qur’an is like a basil plant, which has a good fragrance but a bitter taste, representing their outward display of faith while their heart remains corrupt. Lastly, a hypocrite who does not recite the Qur’an is likened to colocynth, which is both bitter and odorless, signifying complete absence of goodness. The hadith emphasizes the importance of being among those who recite and live by the Qur’an, striving to embody its teachings fully. (Sharh Riyadh as-Saliheen, Ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen)

3. The hadith highlights the virtue of those who carry and practice the Qur’an. It distinguishes between the inward quality of faith, likened to taste, and the outward act of recitation, akin to scent. This comparison helps in grasping the concept more easily. The hadith also emphasize the contrasting nature of those who recite the Qur’an hypocritically, appearing righteous outwardly but harboring evil within, and those who neglect recitation, displaying evil both inwardly and outwardly. So Muslims should be keen on reciting the Qur’an like good believers who resemble citrons in good smell and taste and especially in this month of Qur’an; Ramadhan. And Allah is the grantor of success.

*O Allah, aid us in becoming righteous, grant us Taqwa so that we may do abundant good deeds during the month of Ramadhan and beyond … Ãmeen*

These verses remind us of Allah’s guidance, mercy, and the power of dua. May Allah accept our worship and grant us His blessings in this holy month. Ameen.

Surah Aal-e-Imran, Verse 8:

(They say): “Our Lord! Let not our hearts deviate (from the truth) after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from You. Truly, You are the Bestower.”

May Almighty Allah guides us through this path (Islam), show us His Mercy and Bestow to us every good thing both in Duniyah and Hereafter, Bijahi Rasulullah (SAW) Amin suma amin!!!
