#FG Temporarily Closes Ibadan Airport for International Upgrade

The Federal Government has approved the temporary closure of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA) in Ibadan to facilitate ongoing upgrade works aimed at transforming it into an international airport.

This decision aligns with the Oyo State Government’s vision to enhance the airport’s infrastructure and elevate it to international aviation standards.

Official Announcement by FAAN

In a statement released on Saturday, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the closure, citing safety compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations.

FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, explained that the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has officially closed the runway and airport to ensure safety during the remodeling process.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the temporary closure of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA), Ibadan, due to ongoing upgrade works. Consequently, the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has closed the Runway and Airport in line with ICAO regulations.”

The upgrade includes comprehensive remodeling efforts and safety enhancements to meet international aviation standards. However, authorities did not specify the expected duration of the closure.

Background and Expected Impact

In February 2025, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) hinted at a potential six-month shutdown of the airport starting in March, aligning with the current remodeling efforts.

Previously, in August 2024, the Oyo State Government unveiled an ambitious plan to expand and upgrade SLAA into a full-fledged international airport. The project is expected to:

  • Boost operational capacity and efficiency.
  • Enhance passenger experience with modern facilities.
  • Support economic growth through improved trade, tourism, and connectivity.

FAAN has appealed for public cooperation, emphasizing that the upgrades will deliver long-term benefits to both travelers and the state’s economy.
