#Tinubu Tasks Experts on Roadmap for First Digital Census in 18 Years

In a bold step toward delivering Nigeria’s first digital census in nearly two decades, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated a high-level committee charged with drafting a detailed roadmap within three weeks.

Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, at the committee’s inauguration, President Tinubu underscored the urgency and strategic importance of a modern, data-driven national census. He emphasized that reliable demographic data is critical for shaping effective policies in education, healthcare, security, infrastructure, and economic development.

“We cannot plan effectively without knowing our numbers,” Tinubu stated. “This enumeration must be technology-driven. The world has changed since our last census in 2006, and our methods must evolve accordingly.”

Embracing Technology and Partnerships

The President directed the committee to ensure the exercise incorporates advanced digital tools and biometric systems to enhance transparency and accuracy. He also encouraged the exploration of diverse funding options, including international development partners, while working in tandem with the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.

Leadership and Commitment

Committee chairman Senator Atiku Bagudu, who also serves as Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, pledged to deliver a pragmatic, well-rounded report on time. He highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms as a sign of readiness to execute complex national projects, even in challenging fiscal conditions.

“We will approach this with creativity and purpose, as the President has consistently advocated,” Bagudu said.

NPC Ready to Lead

Nasir Isa Kwarra, Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), reaffirmed the commission’s readiness to lead the census process, emphasizing collaboration with stakeholders and the adoption of digital-first methodologies.

The newly inaugurated eight-member Presidential Committee includes key institutional leaders from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), and the Ministries of Finance and Information—underscoring the government’s drive for a coordinated, all-of-government approach.

As Nigeria prepares for its first population and housing census since 2006, the committee’s forthcoming roadmap is expected to lay the foundation for a credible, transparent, and digitally executed national count that reflects the realities of the 21st century.
