Governors of Nigeria’s 36 states convened in Abuja on Wednesday, April 24, 2025, for a strategic meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), chaired by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, amid growing calls for stronger intergovernmental collaboration and fiscal discipline across states.
The high-level engagement, which took place at the NGF Secretariat in Maitama, Abuja, brought together state chief executives from both the ruling and opposition parties to deliberate on pressing national issues, including security, economic recovery, revenue allocation, and education reforms.
According to sources within the Forum, discussions also included updates on minimum wage negotiations, state budget alignment with national development goals, and a review of subnational performance metrics as part of the World Bank-supported State Fiscal Transparency, Accountability, and Sustainability (SFTAS) programme.
The NGF, which serves as a non-partisan policy platform, reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the federal character principle while strengthening decentralization and grassroots development.
Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) Preceded the Meeting
Prior to the NGF gathering, governors elected under the banner of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) met at the Imo State Liaison Office in Asokoro, under the auspices of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF). The meeting was chaired by Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, who emphasized the need for APC-led states to deepen coordination and policy alignment with the federal government’s Renewed Hope agenda.
PGF discussions centered on the 2027 elections roadmap, party unity, delivery of campaign promises, and the performance scorecard of APC governors in areas such as infrastructure, agriculture, and social welfare.
In a post-meeting briefing, a source close to the PGF revealed that the Forum plans to create a joint policy implementation dashboard to track development benchmarks across APC states. “It’s time to move from promises to performance,” he said.
Unified Outlook on National Issues
Despite political differences, both meetings reportedly ended with a unified resolution to support national security efforts, combat inflation and food insecurity, and ensure states fulfill obligations to workers and pensioners.
The Chairman of the NGF, Governor AbdulRazaq, stated:
“The Forum remains committed to working with the Federal Government and key stakeholders to advance reforms that impact lives positively across all federating units.”
More resolutions and a communiqué are expected to be published in the coming days.
