The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Professor Chris Piwuna as its new National President, succeeding Professor Victor Osodeke.
Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital (JUTH) and Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, emerged victorious at the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held on Sunday in Benin City.
He defeated Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, in a closely watched contest, according to credible sources.
Piwuna takes over leadership of ASUU at a critical time, as the union faces mounting pressure over unresolved issues with the Federal Government, including the distribution of recently released Earned Academic Allowances, ongoing concerns about brain drain, and lingering threats of industrial action.
