Residents of Agbarho community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State have raised concerns over widespread vandalism of railway tracks, calling for urgent intervention from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
Video evidence captured by locals shows rail clips along the Warri-Itakpe corridor dismantled by suspected vandals during the early hours of the day. Community members, shocked by the extent of the damage, warned that the compromised tracks pose a significant safety threat if not promptly repaired.
They appealed to NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, to take immediate action to prevent a potential rail disaster and halt further vandalism. The residents also called on security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force (Railway Command) and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to deploy personnel to secure the area.
DAILYFOCUS NIGERIA notes that rail infrastructure vandalism has plagued the country for over a decade, undermining transportation safety and government investments.
This development comes just as the NRC announced the resumption of the Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS), suspended since April 10, 2025, due to technical and operational issues. Full operations are set to resume on April 30, with trains scheduled to run six days a week—Monday to Wednesday and Friday to Sunday—while Thursdays will be set aside for routine maintenance.
