President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Abuja following his visit to Rome for the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV.
The presidential jet touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
He was welcomed by key government officials including Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; and APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, among others.
President Tinubu departed Nigeria on Saturday, May 17, after receiving an official invitation from the Vatican to attend the inauguration mass of Pope Leo XIV, the newly elected head of the Roman Catholic Church and the 267th Pontiff.
Upon his arrival in Rome, the President was hosted to a dinner by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State. During the meeting, Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to interfaith dialogue, global tolerance, and religious cooperation.
On Sunday, President Tinubu joined other world leaders at St. Peter’s Basilica for the official installation Mass of Pope Leo XIV—formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago-born member of the Augustinian Order.
The President exchanged warm greetings with Pope Leo XIV following the ceremony, emphasizing Nigeria’s dedication to promoting peace and mutual understanding across religious and cultural lines.
The visit adds to Tinubu’s growing list of international diplomatic engagements, underscoring his administration’s effort to strengthen interfaith unity and global cooperation.
