The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the Ekiti State governorship election will hold on Saturday, July 20, 2026, while Osun State will go to the polls on Saturday, August 8, 2026.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the announcement on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of six newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), recently confirmed by the National Assembly.
Yakubu described the conduct of elections in Nigeria as both a challenging task and a sacred responsibility.
“The conduct of elections is not only a huge responsibility but also a sacred duty,” he said.
He also revealed that the commission is concluding preparations for upcoming bye-elections to fill vacant seats in the National and State Houses of Assembly.
“Today’s ceremony is not just a formality; it is a reminder of the enormous responsibility that lies ahead. We must ensure that elections in Nigeria are credible, inclusive, and transparent,” he added.
The newly sworn-in RECs are expected to strengthen INEC’s capacity to handle the growing demands and complexities of electoral processes across the country.
