Former Abia State Governor and current Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has alleged that key figures within Nigeria’s political class are responsible for fuelling the Boko Haram insurgency. Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Monday, Kalu claimed the resurgence of the terrorist group is not coincidental but a politically driven effort aimed at destabilising the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“The political class is behind Boko Haram,” Kalu stated. “They are using terrorism as a tool to fight Tinubu, just like they did with past administrations.”
When asked to specify who he meant by “political class,” Kalu pointed to politicians, wealthy business magnates, and high-ranking civil servants. He argued that many of these individuals are less interested in money and more driven by a thirst for power.
“This is a political war,” he said. “Some of them want to tear down the system just to seize control. That is not how leadership should be attained.”
Kalu described the ongoing insecurity in Nigeria as a calculated scheme by powerful figures who are dissatisfied with the Tinubu government. He stressed that their motive goes beyond financial gain and is rooted in a desire to dominate the country’s political landscape.
“The insecurity in Nigeria is politically induced. These individuals are after political control, not just wealth,” he insisted.
He concluded by calling for national unity and patriotism, urging Nigerians to prioritise the wellbeing of the country over selfish ambitions.
“If we are truly patriots, we must care for the ordinary Nigerian and work together to build a better nation,” Kalu said.
His comments followed a deadly attack in Borno State, where nine passengers were killed by Boko Haram insurgents using improvised explosive devices in Mairari Village, Guzamala Local Government Area.
In response to the incident, Borno State House of Assembly Speaker Abdulkarim Lawan condemned the killings as “inhumane” and urged the military to intensify efforts to reclaim Guzamala from terrorist control.
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, also raised alarms about the renewed wave of terrorist violence, expressing concern over the deteriorating security situation in the region.
