#JUST IN: Shettima Visits Niger State to Commiserate with Victims of Mokwa Flood Disaster (Video)

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday visited Mokwa, Niger State, to sympathize with victims of the devastating flood disaster that struck the area on May 29, claiming over 200 lives, displacing more than 3,000 residents, and destroying 503 households.

The flood also submerged and collapsed three major bridges in the area, severely hampering rescue and relief operations.

Shettima’s visit comes on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who ordered an urgent federal intervention in response to the tragedy. The Vice President was received by Niger State officials at the capital before heading straight to the affected communities, where he delivered a message of condolence and solidarity on behalf of the Federal Government.

“It is truly heartbreaking to witness the extent of the devastation here,” Shettima said during the visit.
“We are here to offer comfort to the bereaved, to stand with those who have lost their homes and livelihoods, and to assure you that the Federal Government will not abandon you in your time of distress.”

In the wake of the disaster, Governor Umar Bago of Niger State has announced the cancellation of all Eid-el-Kabir festivities across the state as a mark of respect for the victims.

A statement by Abubakar Usman, Secretary to the State Government, confirmed that all public celebrations, including Hawan Bariki, Durbar processions, and other traditional events, have been suspended.

“The governor has directed that this year’s Eid-el-Kabir be observed in a low-key manner across all emirates,” the statement read.
“This decision reflects the gravity of the tragedy and the need for a period of mourning, reflection, and prayer for the departed.”

Described as one of the worst flood disasters in the region in decades, the Mokwa incident has left families shattered, with entire communities struggling to recover.

Governor Bago also urged citizens to use the Eid period to engage in acts of charity and prayer for the victims, and to support relief efforts aimed at rebuilding affected areas.
