Python and Other Wild Animals Found in Kano House of Ex-AGF Ahmed Idris Facing N109bn Fraud Trial

Authorities have discovered a python, a crocodile, and a lion cub in the home of Ahmed Idris, the former Accountant General of the Federation, located in Kano State.

Idris, who served during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, is currently facing legal proceedings over allegations of embezzling over N109 billion. He was arrested and charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), drawing significant public attention. Since then, he has remained largely out of the spotlight.

Reports indicate that the python had escaped from Idris’s residence, causing panic in several communities including Daneji, Mandawari, and Kabara. The Managing Director of Kano Zoo, Sadik Kura Muhammad, confirmed that the python, along with the crocodile and lion cub, has been safely retrieved and relocated to the zoo.

Speaking on a local radio station, Muhammad said the incident prompted swift action, with Idris voluntarily handing over the animals to the government. He assured the public that the animals did not pose any immediate threat.

There is legislation known as the Wild Animal Law, which allows individuals to keep certain wild animals at home,” he explained. “However, endangered species—like parrots and vultures—must be kept in zoos to aid conservation efforts, not for private entertainment.”

Muhammad noted that the law requires individuals to obtain a license to keep wild animals, and also mandates proper housing, feeding, and safety measures.

When I received the report, I verified that Mr. Idris had a valid license and that the lion was only a cub, not dangerous. However, as wild animals grow, they must be relocated to a zoo to ensure public safety,” he said. “Licenses must be renewed annually, and animals must be transferred before they become a threat.”

He added that due to concerns raised by neighbors, Idris agreed to surrender the animals. The zoo team carried out the evacuation during the night to avoid public unrest.

“All the animals are now safely housed at Kano Zoo,” he concluded. “There is no need for alarm.”
