BREAKING: Former PDP Chairman and Buhari’s Minister, Chief Audu Ogbeh, Passes Away at 78

Nigeria has lost one of its most prominent political figures, Chief Audu Innocent Ogbeh, former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, who died on Saturday at the age of 78.

The family of the late elder statesman confirmed his passing in an official statement, noting that he died peacefully.

“He departed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, service, and dedication to our nation and community. We are comforted by the many lives he touched and the examples he set,” the family said.
“Details of the funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course. We thank friends, colleagues, and well-wishers for their prayers and support during this time. We will appreciate some privacy as we mourn the loss of our patriarch.”

A Towering Political Career

Chief Ogbeh’s career in public service spanned more than four decades, earning him a reputation as a principled and seasoned political leader.

He served as Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 2001 to 2005, playing a crucial role in shaping party policies during a period of intense political activity in Nigeria.

In 2015, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development by then-President Muhammadu Buhari, where he championed agricultural reforms aimed at reducing Nigeria’s dependence on food imports and boosting local production.

Earlier Years in Public Office

Long before his national prominence, Ogbeh was a member of the Benue State House of Assembly, serving as Deputy Speaker in the late 1970s. He later became Federal Minister of Communications between 1982 and 1983 during President Shehu Shagari’s administration.

Known for his eloquence, discipline, and commitment to national development, Ogbeh was also a strong advocate for rural economic growth and food security.

Tributes Expected Nationwide

Following news of his death, political leaders, former colleagues, and citizens are expected to pay tribute to his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s governance and development.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in the coming days.
