The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to enhancing safety and rescue operations across Nigeria’s waterways, following a recent boat mishap in Sokoto State that prompted swift rescue interventions.
Through the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the government announced plans to deploy five new boats to Sokoto to strengthen waterway safety and improve emergency response capabilities.
The decision was disclosed during a meeting on August 25, 2025, involving the Minister of State for Works, Mohammed Bello Goronyo, Esq, NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamji, and senior officials of the agency.
Oyebamji revealed that the five boats — including one aluminum vessel and one iron vessel — will soon be delivered, with immediate deployment to Sokoto for rescue and patrol operations. He also confirmed that NIWA has begun clearing water hyacinth blockages that obstruct navigation in affected waterways.
To further improve safety, the agency has finalized plans to distribute life jackets to riverine communities in the coming weeks, ensuring better preparedness for residents who depend on waterways for daily transport and trade.
Minister Goronyo emphasized that these initiatives align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritizes improved infrastructure, safety, and service delivery across critical sectors, including inland water transport.
He stressed the need for continuous collaboration among stakeholders, stating:
“These engagements must not be one-off events. The government is fully committed to providing the infrastructure, equipment, and policies needed to make our waterways safe, efficient, and secure.”
The minister also commended NIWA and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for their rapid, coordinated response during the recent Sokoto boat accident, which saved multiple lives.
“Their swift synergy before other responders arrived exemplifies the power of unity in emergency response,” he noted.
This renewed effort underscores the Federal Government’s determination to protect lives, improve navigation safety, and promote sustainable development in Nigeria’s riverine communities.
