PSG Coach Luis Enrique Suffers Cycling Accident, Set for Surgery

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) manager Luis Enrique has been hospitalized after suffering a fractured collarbone in a cycling accident.

The French champions confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday via X, noting that the 55-year-old Spaniard would require surgery.

“Following a cycling accident on Friday, Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique was treated by the emergency services and will undergo surgery for a fractured collarbone,” the club said. “The club expresses its full support and wishes him a swift recovery. Further updates will be shared in due course.”

It remains unclear whether Enrique was struck by a vehicle or fell off his bike unaided. A keen cyclist, the former Barcelona boss regularly competes in endurance events. In March 2023, he completed an eight-day, 700-kilometre race in South Africa.

Enrique, who guided PSG to a historic treble last season, ended the club’s long wait for Champions League glory with a commanding 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in Munich last May. His side, however, fell short in July’s Club World Cup final against Chelsea.

PSG have started the new Ligue 1 campaign with a perfect record but face a demanding run of fixtures in the coming weeks. The Parisians open their Champions League title defence against Atalanta on September 17, before hosting arch-rivals Marseille in the season’s first ‘Le Classique.’ Enrique is also set for an emotional return to Barcelona on October 1.
