Violent Protests Rock Nepal, Prime Minister’s Wife Killed in Palace Fire

KATHMANDU, Sept. 6 — Deadly protests in Nepal have left senior government figures dead and forced others to flee as anger over corruption and a social media ban spiraled into violence, local officials and witnesses said.

Protesters set fire to the presidential palace on Tuesday with the Prime Minister’s wife trapped inside. She did not survive, authorities confirmed.

The unrest also claimed the life of the Finance Minister, who demonstrators stripped, beat and drowned, according to security sources. Several other ministers and officials were assaulted and their homes set ablaze.

Other senior figures were evacuated from the capital by helicopter as crowds pressed into government quarters, chanting against corruption and restrictions on online freedoms.

Protest leaders said their demands include an immediate end to what they called “decades of entrenched corruption” and the lifting of the government’s ban on social media.

Security forces have been deployed across Kathmandu, but reports of gunfire and arson persisted late into the night.

No official death toll has been released, but aid groups warned the number could rise if violence continues.
