Tobi Amusan clinches silver at World Championships in Tokyo

Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, produced a stellar display in the women’s 100m hurdles final at the Tokyo 2025 World Championships, storming to silver with a blistering 12.29s run.

The 28-year-old battled fiercely from the blocks but was edged out at the line by Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who claimed gold in a national record of 12.24s. America’s Grace Stark clocked 12.34s to take bronze, while compatriot Masai Russell finished fourth in 12.44s.

Amusan, who etched her name in history in 2022 as the first Nigerian and African to win the world 100m hurdles title in Oregon, had been chasing a return to the top of the podium. Though the gold eluded her this time, the silver medal further strengthens her legacy as one of the greatest in the sport—adding to her world record (12.12s), multiple Diamond League trophies, and Commonwealth Games triumphs.

After failing to reach the final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, her Tokyo performance serves as a powerful comeback statement, silencing critics and reaffirming her place among the world’s elite hurdlers.

Nigeria’s medal chase in Tokyo, however, continues. Rising star Ezekiel Nathaniel booked his spot in the semifinals of the men’s 400m hurdles with a solid 48.37s run in the heats. The 21-year-old, already one of Africa’s brightest prospects, will push for a place in the final on Wednesday as he eyes a potential podium finish.
