BREAKING: Rivers Assembly holds first plenary after emergency rule

The Rivers State House of Assembly will reconvene for its first plenary session at 10 a.m. on Thursday, marking a return to democratic lawmaking after six months of emergency rule in the state.

This development follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision on Wednesday to lift the emergency proclamation and reinstate elected officials, including Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the Assembly.

According to The PUNCH, Thursday’s sitting will be presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule and will take place at the Conference Hall of the Legislative Quarters, Aba Road, where lawmakers have been meeting temporarily.

Temporary Sitting Venue

The Assembly has been unable to use its official chambers on Moscow Road after the complex was bombed by arsonists and subsequently demolished by the state government.

During the emergency period, Sole Administrator Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd.) initiated reconstruction efforts on the Assembly building, but the project was not completed before his exit from office on Wednesday.

Thursday’s plenary is expected to formally re-launch legislative business in Rivers State under democratic governance.
