Rivers House of Assembly asks Fubara to submit list of commissioner nominees

The Rivers State House of Assembly has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to immediately forward a list of Commissioner-nominees for screening and confirmation, in a move aimed at restoring full governance to the state after months of political turbulence.

The resolution was reached on Thursday during the lawmakers’ first plenary session since the end of the six-month emergency rule imposed by President Bola Tinubu in March.

Presiding over the session at the temporary chambers in the Legislative Quarters, Aba Road, Speaker Martin Amaewhule stressed the urgency of filling the state executive council positions and drafting an Appropriation Law to guide spending for the rest of the year.

“The submission of commissioner nominees will enable the House to perform its constitutional duty of screening and confirming qualified persons to serve the people of Rivers State. We also call on the governor to immediately commence the process of drafting the Appropriation Law for effective governance,” Amaewhule said.

The Assembly, which had been paralysed during the emergency period, noted that the resolutions were necessary to stabilise governance and ensure resources are allocated efficiently across key sectors.

The call comes as Rivers State gradually transitions back to democratic rule following the reinstatement of Governor Fubara on Wednesday. The governor, who has yet to react to the lawmakers’ resolutions, resumed office after the sole administrator, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), handed over power.

Observers say the Assembly’s move marks a crucial step toward normalising legislative and executive functions in the oil-rich state, which has been plagued by political crises and institutional breakdowns in recent months.
