Africa’s First Underground Tunnel Project Set to Begin in Lagos – SGOF

The Surveyor General of the Federation (SGOF), Surv. Abuduganiyu Adebomehin, has revealed that the Federal Government will soon commence construction of Africa’s first underground tunnel in Lagos State. The tunnel, connecting Victoria Island to Badagry, will be a landmark achievement in Nigeria’s and Africa’s infrastructure development.

Adebomehin announced this during a meeting with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) in his office. He stated, “My office toured the coastal bridge with the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi. The Federal Government plans to build a tunnel from Victoria Island to Badagry, the first of its kind in Africa.”

In a statement issued by Henry David, Head of Information and Public Affairs at OSGOF, Adebomehin also confirmed that the Federal Government’s initiative to map Nigeria is progressing. He noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was briefed on the outdated mapping of Nigeria, last done in the 1970s, and emphasized the importance of this project under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Addressing concerns about relocating OSGOF to the Presidency, Adebomehin urged those threatening legal action to reconsider, stating, “Challenging this move is tantamount to opposing a presidential order.” He added that positioning OSGOF under the Presidency would enhance its potential, reduce bureaucratic delays, and provide better funding for the surveying profession.

Surv. Robert Coker, Head of Hydrography at OSGOF, echoed this sentiment, warning that opposing the relocation equates to challenging the nation’s highest authority. He called on NIS and surveyors to uphold the profession’s reputation and mentor young surveyors effectively.

Representing the NIS FCT branch, Secretary Surv. Alfred Adeojo praised the relocation, noting, “The move of OSGOF to the Presidency signals a bright future for our profession. We commend the SGOF’s courage and will follow his example.”
