Police arrest NURTW leader over murder of dispatch rider in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Samsideen Oladiti, a prominent leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), in connection with the assault and murder of a dispatch rider on Lagos Island.

The incident occurred on Tapa Street, where the victim was allegedly attacked and severely beaten, leading to his death.

According to eyewitnesses, Oladiti, popularly known as “Shamelon”, and his accomplices were involved in the altercation that claimed the rider’s life. He is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) as investigations continue.

Deputy Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Friday.

He revealed that Oladiti, 55, was linked to two violent crimes on Lagos Island: one case of murder and another of assault occasioning harm.

  • On September 17, 2025, around 3 p.m., Oladiti allegedly attacked a dispatch rider using a helmet and fists, inflicting serious injuries. The victim was rushed to hospital and placed on oxygen but later died.

  • On August 28, 2025, another altercation was reported involving Oladiti, during which he allegedly used a metallic ring to repeatedly strike a man on the head and face. Despite receiving medical treatment, the victim succumbed to his injuries on September 17, 2025. His body has been deposited for autopsy.

Following the rider’s death, sympathizers staged a violent protest at Oladiti’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island. The mob set two motorcycles belonging to the suspect ablaze, sparking tension in the area.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, led a combined team of mobile policemen, conventional officers, and tactical squads to the scene. He quickly restored order, preventing further unrest.

“The suspect is in custody and will be promptly prosecuted after investigations are concluded,” CP Jimoh assured residents.

The police have vowed to pursue justice for the victims, promising that the case will be treated with urgency to deter future acts of violence.
