Former US President Donald Trump has once again sparked headlines after making a blunt remark about the food served at King Charles’s lavish state banquet in Windsor Castle.
Trump, who spent two days in the UK this week as a guest of King Charles and Queen Camilla, was treated to one of the most opulent royal dinners, attended by what he described as “the biggest people in the world.” But when asked by reporters what he ate at the grand event, Trump dismissed the details with characteristic candor.
“Whatever the hell they served us,” he quipped.
Praise for the Royal Family
Despite his irreverent comment about the menu, Trump was full of admiration for his hosts. He described King Charles as a “wonderful guy” and said he enjoyed spending time with the monarch.
“I don’t know, I think just being with King Charles. He’s a wonderful guy. I got to know him very well. I knew him before, but now I know him a little better,” he said.
The former president also praised the hospitality shown to him, noting that he felt the UK’s treatment was a mark of respect for America.
“They treated us great. They treated our country well. That was really respectful for our country, the way they did it, because last night was beautiful.”
The Lavish Menu
The Windsor Castle banquet featured a meticulously prepared three-course meal:
-
Starter: Hampshire watercress panna cotta with parmesan shortbread and quail egg salad.
-
Main: Organic Norfolk chicken ballotine wrapped in courgettes, with a thyme and savoury-infused jus.
-
Dessert: Bombe glacée cardinal; a vanilla ice cream bombe with a Kentish raspberry sorbet interior and lightly poached Victoria plums.
While Trump brushed off the details, the sweet-toothed former president likely enjoyed the dessert course.
Royal Connections
Trump also spoke warmly about his interactions with other members of the Royal Family. He revealed that both he and former First Lady Melania Trump enjoyed the company of the Princess of Wales.
“She thought she was great. I did too. I sat with her last night, Melania went with her today. She thought she was great. A very wonderful person. She went through a lot too — but hopefully that’s all gone,” he said.
He added kind words for Prince William, calling him “wonderful,” and expressed admiration for King Charles’s transition from prince to monarch.
A Trip of Symbolism
Trump summed up the visit as a “lovely trip,” even remarking positively on the press coverage, a rarity for him. He also joked that he had seen “more paintings than any human being has ever seen” during his stay at Windsor.
The banquet, steeped in royal tradition, was a showcase of Britain’s cultural and diplomatic flair. But, true to form, Trump’s frank assessment of the menu has become the standout moment.
