The Federal Government has announced that the National Energy Masterplan Implementation Committee (NEMIC) will drive the rollout of reliable, affordable, and climate-friendly energy solutions across Nigeria.
Speaking at the committee’s inauguration in Abuja, Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, described the initiative as “a milestone in Nigeria’s energy journey.” He explained that the masterplan provides a blueprint for energy security and sustainability.
“The Masterplan is a comprehensive roadmap that charts Nigeria’s course toward a secure, diversified, and sustainable energy future. It outlines pathways for strengthening our energy mix, accelerating clean technologies, and ensuring our development agenda aligns with global climate action,” Nnaji said.
He assured the government’s support but urged committee members to take ownership of the process: “The responsibility rests on your shoulders. The work you undertake will influence Nigeria’s economic growth, drive social progress, and safeguard our environment.”
Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) and NEMIC Chair, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, recalled that the committee was set up on October 17, 2024, and has since been preparing for its mandate. He highlighted the creation of the National Energy Fund as a major financing tool.
According to him, $50 billion will be raised over the next decade to fund renewable energy projects and infrastructure. “The fund was developed in line with the masterplan approved by the Federal Executive Council. It is designed to attract both public and private investment. The $50 billion goal gives NEMIC the mandate to mobilise resources to power renewable and new energy infrastructure,” Abdullahi explained.
The masterplan, already approved by FEC, is expected to anchor Nigeria’s transition to sustainable energy development, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and position the country as a major player in the global clean energy movement.
