LASTMA deploy UAVs to manage traffic in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has unveiled the deployment of state-of-the-art Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to enhance traffic management, strengthen security surveillance, and reinforce public safety across the metropolis.

In a statement issued on Thursday, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the initiative as a transition from traditional analogue methods to advanced digital intelligence, aligning with the visionary mandate of the Lagos State Government.

“This accentuates the administration’s steadfast dedication to leveraging innovation in pursuit of sustainable urban mobility, heightened safety, and operational excellence,” he said.

According to him, the UAVs—equipped with aerial reconnaissance and high-definition monitoring capabilities—will enable proactive traffic management and control across the state.

“The deployment of these devices signifies a watershed moment in Lagos’ traffic management ecosystem, seamlessly elevating the authority from conventional reactive enforcement to predictive, intelligence-driven operations,” Bakare-Oki added.

He explained that the drones will provide real-time aerial oversight, allowing for quicker interventions, improved safety outcomes, enhanced emergency response coordination, and stronger security frameworks. They will also help cultivate a more disciplined motoring culture in Lagos.

Assuring Lagosians of strict adherence to privacy safeguards, ethical standards, and regulatory compliance, Bakare-Oki stressed that the move would further reinforce public trust in the system’s transparency and integrity.

“The authority reaffirms its unwavering resolve to continuously innovate in traffic management, reduce travel times, curtail road traffic mishaps, and preserve lives and property throughout Lagos State,” he said.

He noted that this milestone reflects another resounding testament to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda, where technology and innovation serve as indispensable drivers of a safer, smarter, and more habitable Lagos.

The LASTMA boss further said the drones will complement the agency’s responsiveness to emergencies, accidents, and traffic-related contingencies, in addition to its toll-free hotline: 080000527862.
