Pupils Learn on Bare Floors at Zamfara’s UBE School Despite N79.6 Billion Education Budget

The UBE Low-Cost Primary School in Gusau Tudun Wada Ward, Zamfara State, is in a deplorable state, with over 113 pupils forced to sit on bare floors due to a lack of desks, chairs, and a conducive learning environment, according to a statement by the civic accountability platform MonITNG. The group criticized the dire conditions, highlighting overcrowded classrooms where teachers merge two classes into one, making effective learning nearly impossible.

Despite Zamfara’s 2025 “Rescue Budget 2.0” allocating N79.6 billion (14% of N545 billion) to education, and the 2024 budget assigning N51.3 billion, the school’s condition reflects a stark disconnect between funding promises and reality. MonITNG noted that Zamfara also receives federal and international support from UBEC, UNICEF, USAID, and the Global Partnership for Education, yet these funds have not improved conditions at schools like UBE Low-Cost.

The group accused the state government of misplaced priorities, citing a reported N974 million spent on foreign trips that could have equipped thousands of classrooms.

“The situation is a failure of governance, accountability, and political will,” MonITNG stated, describing it as a violation of children’s fundamental right to education. The organization urged Governor Dauda Lawal to declare a state of emergency in education and ensure budgeted funds reach classrooms, warning that continued neglect threatens Zamfara’s human capital development.
