President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially nominated Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The appointment — confirmed by the National Council of State on Thursday — follows the exit of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who led the commission from 2015 to October 2025. In accordance with constitutional requirements, President Tinubu will forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for screening and confirmation.

Born on April 25, 1967, Professor Amupitan hails from Ayetoro Gbede, located in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, North-Central Nigeria.

He began his tertiary education at Kwara State Polytechnic between 1982 and 1984 before proceeding to the University of Jos, where he obtained his LLB (1987), LLM (1993), and PhD (2007).
Remarkably, he built his academic career at the same university where he studied, rising through the ranks to become a Professor of Law.

Professor Amupitan is a Professor of Law at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), where he has taught and mentored generations of lawyers and legal scholars for more than three decades.
