12 Local Governments in Katsina Sign Peace Deal with Bandits

No fewer than twelve local government areas (LGAs) in Katsina State have entered into a peace agreement with bandits operating in the region.

The peace accord—brokered by community leaders and security agencies—seeks to end the persistent attacks, killings, and kidnappings that have plagued the state in recent years.

Over the past few weeks, at least nine LGAs, including Batsari, Kankara, Kurfi, Musawa, Danmusa, Jibia, Faskari, Sabuwa, and Dandume, signed peace deals with the armed groups. On Sunday, October 12, Daily Trust reported that three additional LGAs—Malumfashi, Funtua, and Bakori—had also reached peace accords with the bandits in renewed efforts to curb insecurity.

The latest meeting, held in Kakumi community, Bakori LGA, brought together representatives of the bandits and delegates from the three local governments. The dialogue focused on strengthening ongoing peace initiatives and building trust between the two sides.

Community sources said the talks achieved a major breakthrough, as several bandit leaders reportedly pledged to suspend hostilities and halt all forms of attacks within the affected areas starting Sunday, October 12.

The renewed engagement forms part of a broader state-wide strategy to restore peace and revive farming, trade, and other rural economic activities disrupted by years of insecurity.

Traditional rulers, community elders, and security operatives attended the meeting and urged all parties to honour the agreement in the interest of lasting peace and stability.

Residents of the participating LGAs have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the accord will pave the way for sustainable peace across the state.
