Zamfara Police Confirm Five Officers Killed in Bandit Ambush on Gusau-Funtua Highway

The Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed the deaths of five officers in a fierce gun battle with bandits along the Gusau-Funtua Federal Highway on Thursday. According to DSP Yazid Abubakar, the Police Public Relations Officer, the ambush occurred around 1:00 p.m. near Gidan Giye village in Tsafe Local Government Area, targeting a patrol team led by ASP John Dogara.

The officers, from the Operations Department, engaged the bandits in intense gunfire, neutralizing several assailants while others fled with injuries. Normalcy has been restored, with reinforcements deployed to secure the highway. Commissioner of Police CP IB Maikaba praised the fallen officers’ bravery and reaffirmed the command’s resolve to combat banditry.

Governor Dauda Lawal, addressing the incident, mourned the loss of eight security personnel, including policemen and Community Protection Guard members, killed in the ambush. He prayed for an end to Zamfara’s security challenges. Additionally, bandits attacked a mosque in Maradawa, Gusau, abducting worshippers during Subhi prayers, and on September 26, 2025, a similar attack in Yandoto killed five and kidnapped others.
