ADC Warns Against Political Witch-Hunt in Alleged Coup Probe

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has cautioned the Federal Government against using reports of an alleged coup plot to target opposition leaders or suppress dissent, warning that such actions threaten Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, expressed concern over claims that the Defence Intelligence Agency arrested military officers for plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration, with media reports linking a former southern governor to the plot. The ADC criticized the government’s silence despite the Defence Headquarters’ denial of the coup narrative, suggesting it may be a deliberate tactic to divert attention from governance issues or justify clamping down on opposition.

The party called for transparency, urging the government to clarify the situation or quash the rumors to prevent misuse of national security as a pretext for intimidation. The ADC reaffirmed its opposition to any form of dictatorship and emphasized support for legitimate actions to protect democracy, while strongly opposing efforts to silence lawful voices under the guise of security concerns.
