A cement-laden truck, reportedly owned by Dangote Cement, crashed in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, on Wednesday night, killing eight people, including a pregnant woman, a mother, and her child. The accident occurred around 8:00 pm near Adekunle Ajasin University and Holy Trinity Church, allegedly due to brake failure as the truck traveled from Obajana, Kogi State. It rammed into traders and road users in the densely populated area.
Angry residents blamed the crash on the removal of a barricade meant to restrict articulated vehicles, claiming some locals extorted N10,000 from truck drivers to pass through.
They noted recurring accidents in the area have claimed many lives. The Federal Road Safety Corps Sector Commander, Ibitoye, confirmed the deaths, stating the truck lost control after hitting a barricade, killing five males, two females, and one child.
