Lagos State to Decommission Old Dumpsites, Enhance Waste Management

The Lagos State Government plans to close outdated landfills to improve waste management and environmental sustainability. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced this after meeting with chairmen of all 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas. The initiative aims to create a cleaner, flood-free Lagos through better state-local collaboration.

“We are decommissioning landfills like Olusosun and Solous 3, which have outlived their usefulness, while keeping functional ones like Epe efficient,” Wahab said.

The meeting focused on addressing flooding and environmental violations at the community level. Wahab stressed that local governments must ensure proper waste collection, community awareness, and enforcement against illegal dumping. He also reaffirmed the ban on street trading and called for decisive action against environmental offenses.

“The state is investing in resilient drainage and flood control infrastructure, and local governments must reflect this commitment,” Wahab said. He emphasized that environmental sustainability requires cooperation across all government levels.
