A new TheCable investigation has uncovered how social media accounts linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) helped spread claims of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.

The open-source analysis found over 165,000 posts on X (formerly Twitter) between January and October 2025, reaching an estimated 2.83 billion users — more than twelve times Nigeria’s population. Key hashtags driving the trend included #ChristianGenocide, #LaraLogan, #TruthNigeria, and #BiafraExitNow, the last reflecting IPOB’s separatist message.
According to Confidence MacHarry of SBM Intelligence, IPOB began pushing the “Christian genocide” narrative as early as 2016. TheCable reported that accounts supporting IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu were among the most active in promoting the claims.

The report also pointed to international ties, noting that U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, who has accused Nigeria of anti-Christian violence, received significant donations from the pro-Israel lobby group AIPAC, suggesting complex political and religious intersections.
The issue reignited after the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) rejected remarks by presidential aide Daniel Bwala, accusing him of misrepresenting its position following his visit to CAN headquarters.
While some U.S. lawmakers have echoed genocide claims, the Nigerian government insists they are false and part of efforts to destabilize the country.
