JUST IN: Many trapped as two-storey building collapses in Lagos

A two-storey building collapsed early Monday at 54 Cole Street, Oyingbo, Lagos, trapping several residents inside.

  1. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident, stating that the structure previously marked as distressed collapsed around 12:20 a.m.. Rescue teams from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station were immediately deployed to the scene.

So far, 15 people, including seven men, four women, and four children, have been rescued with varying injuries and taken to nearby hospitals. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing.

Building collapses are frequent in Lagos, often linked to poor enforcement of construction standards, sub-standard materials, and inadequate inspections.

In recent years, several major incidents have occurred, including the Ikoyi high-rise collapse of 2021, which killed at least 42 people, and a Yaba building collapse in September 2025, which also left multiple casualties.
