10 herders killed as Lakurawa terrorists launch reprisal attack in Kebbi

At least ten people were killed on Sunday in a reprisal attack on a Fulani settlement in Tilli community, Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The violence reportedly followed the killing of a vigilante member by suspected Lakurawa bandits. Locals blamed Fulani herders for the death, leading to a retaliatory assault in which over ten people were killed and several others injured.

A resident said the attack was a mistake, explaining that the Fulani were wrongly accused. Authorities are still searching for additional victims.

Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, and officials of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) visited the community to console the affected families. Police spokesperson CSP Nafiu Abubakar said he had not yet received a full report on the incident.

The Lakurawa group has been linked to multiple deadly attacks across Sokoto and Kebbi States this year, killing dozens and clashing with security forces. Originating about six years ago in Sokoto, the group is believed to have ties to Mali-based insurgents such as JNIM and ISIL affiliates, and has gradually embedded itself in border communities.
